stem cell therapy
Over the past decade, great strides have been made in the use of stem cells for the treatment of various medical conditions found in both humans and companion animals. Main Line Veterinary Hospital is pleased to offer this innovative treatment option to help manage the ongoing health and happiness of our patients.
What is stem cell therapy?
Stem cell therapy involves the harvesting of healthy stem cells from certain areas of the body and then reintroducing them via injection to areas that may be experiencing pain or mobility issues. Currently, veterinary stem cell therapy is primarily used to treat arthritis in dogs and cats; however, research is also underway to develop treatment for other diseases.
Dr. Hahn is certified in Stem Cell Therapy. We utilize Vet Stem as the company that processes the tissue samples from our patients and provides the purified stem cells for the injections. Vet Stem has the most experience and research in the field of companion stem cell therapy.
What does the process involve?
The process of stem cell therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your pet. Certain tests must be performed to determine whether your companion would be an appropriate candidate for this type of therapy. If your pet qualifies, we will then schedule an appointment to have the cells harvested. We will safely sedate your pet, gather the cells and send them to Vet Stem to be processed and returned. The purified stem cells are then returned to our office.
Injection of the cells will also be performed under general anesthesia, to ensure that your loved one remains as safe and comfortable as possible throughout the entire process.
There are many benefits to using stem cell therapy as an alternative to other treatment options, such as long term pain medications or surgery. These benefits include, but are not limited to:
Less invasive
Safer
Faster recovery time
Less expensive
Additionally, your pet’s harvested cells can be stored for future use.
If your loved one suffers from a painful medical condition like arthritis, we encourage you to start a conversation with us today and find out whether stem cell therapy would be a good option for your pet. We can help them live a happier, more comfortable life!
