When Is It An Emergency?

It can be difficult to know when your pet needs immediate emergency care. Use this guide to help determine the urgency of your pet’s situation.

Seek Immediate Emergency Care

These situations require immediate veterinary attention. Call or go directly to an emergency hospital:

Difficulty breathing or continuous coughing
Bleeding that doesn’t stopped within 15 minutes
Unable to urinate or defecate, or signs of painful attempts
Suspected poisoning or toxin ingestion
Seizures or collapse/loss of consciousness
Eye injury or sudden blindness
Severe vomiting or diarrhea (especially with blood)
Bloated, distended abdomen (especially in large breed dogs)
Severe trauma (hit by car, fall from height, etc.)
Extreme pain or continuous crying
Heatstroke or hypothermia symptoms
Choking or foreign object in throat
Bite wounds from another animal
Broken bones or inability to walk

Monitor & Call During Business Hours

These situations warrant attention but can typically wait for regular business hours:

Mild vomiting or diarrhea (1-2 episodes, otherwise acting normal)

Action: Monitor closely. Call during business hours if it continues or worsens.

Minor limping (still bearing weight on the leg)

Action: Rest and restrict activity. Call for an appointment within 24-48 hours.

Ear scratching or head shaking

Action: Likely an ear infection. Schedule an appointment within a few days.

Mild coughing or sneezing

Action: Monitor for worsening. Call during business hours if it persists.

Decreased appetite for one meal

Action: Monitor. If it continues beyond 24 hours or other symptoms develop, call us.

Small cut or abrasion with minor bleeding

Action: Clean with water. Call during business hours for wound care advice.

It is an emergency!
